Celebrating Success: Haberdashers’ Slade Green Primary Achieves 'Good' with 'Outstanding' for Personal Development in Recent Ofsted Inspection

We are thrilled to announce that Haberdashers’ Slade Green Primary has achieved a fantastic result in its latest Ofsted inspection. They are rated as a 'Good' school with 'Outstanding' for Personal Development. The inspection, which took place on 28th and 29th February 2024, highlighted numerous strengths and commendations that truly reflect the dedication and excellence of the school community.

This comes after excellent Key Stage Two results for Slade Green. Pupils have excelled over the last few years, with disadvantaged children making exceptional progress – Slade Green is now top in the borough of Bexley for the progress made by disadvantaged children in 2023. This school has even made it to the top 1% nationally for progress in Maths, with 55% of the 2023 Year 6 cohort achieving the higher maths standard, compared with 35% the previous year.

Key strengths identified by the inspectors include their robust personal, social, health, and economic programmes, which foster pupils' understanding of crucial values such as aspiration and personal responsibility. The provision of a diverse range of after-school clubs, including dance, sports, and choir, was praised for igniting passion and enthusiasm among pupils.

One of the standout features highlighted by the inspection was Slade Green’s innovative Uniform United Reuse scheme, which provides free school uniforms to those in need, embodying their commitment to inclusivity and support within the community. Additionally, the school’s strong partnerships with the Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller community received national recognition, underscoring their dedication to fostering meaningful connections and inclusivity.

Moreover, the inspectors were impressed by the ambitious aspirations of pupils, with many expressing a desire to pursue higher education at university. The transformation of Slade Green’s curriculum, with a focus on embedding clear progression of knowledge and skills across all subjects, was also noted as a significant achievement.

Furthermore, the report praised the school's effective safeguarding arrangements and strategies to address attendance issues, ensuring that all pupils have the opportunity to thrive in a safe and supportive environment.

Jan Mintram, Principal of Haberdashers’ Slade Green Primary said:

“I am privileged to lead such a dedicated team of passionate and talented staff who are committed to ensuring that all children receive an excellent education. A huge thank you also goes to our Governors and the wider Trust for their ongoing support and challenge and to all parents who contributed comments of support. We are delighted with the outcome of the inspection and look forward to building on our successes for a brighter future.”

Commenting on the inspection findings, the report highlighted the following:

  • Emphasis on Personal Development: "Pupils’ personal development is at the centre of the school. Leaders use this to underpin the opportunities to develop pupils’ cultural capital and experiences. This is interwoven through the curriculum and beyond."
  • High Ambitions: "Leaders, at all levels, share high ambitions for pupils. Leaders are diligent in addressing the disadvantages that some pupils may face. Pupils appreciate that they can learn about things they need to be ‘great in the future’."
  • Leadership Opportunities: "Pupils eagerly take on many leadership responsibilities. They represent their peers with pride as members of the school parliament, digital, reading and well-being leaders."
  • Effective Support for SEND: "Robust systems are in place to ensure that leaders swiftly identify pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND)."
  • Promotion of Talents: "Pupils pursue their interests and talents through a wide range of well-planned outings, clubs, and events. They are proud to represent their school in trust and national competitions."
  • Positive Attitudes to Learning: "Pupils’ attitudes to learning are strong. They listen well and respond positively to their teachers. Information is presented clearly. Teachers use ‘brain breaks’ activities effectively. This ensures that pupils are ready to move on to new learning. They settle promptly to work."
