Celebrating Teaching Assistants and Classroom Support Staff

Today, on National Teaching Assistants’ Day, we celebrate the incredible dedication, skill and care of the teaching assistants and classroom support staff across our Trust. These colleagues play a vital role in helping every child and young person thrive, providing support in the classroom, nurturing confidence, and inspiring curiosity and growth.

Below, meet just three of our amazing team members, who share their experiences, insights and the qualities they believe make a difference every day in our schools.

Bryony - HLTA - Haberdashers' Knights Primary

Bryony has been a Higher-Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) for 12 years, supporting pupils across the school with patience, adaptability and dedication. She thrives on the variety each day brings, enjoying the surprises and challenges that make every classroom unique.

Originally working in animal science, Bryony found her way into education and quickly realised it was the career for her. She believes that no child fits into a single mould — every pupil has their own strengths, challenges and ways of learning, and supporting them to flourish is at the heart of her work.

Influenced by a primary school teacher who made learning fun and relatable, Bryony values humour, creativity and flexibility in her role. Her advice to anyone considering a career as a TA or HLTA is to embrace the variety, be adaptable, learn from colleagues, and enjoy the immensely rewarding experience of helping children grow.

Ernie - Associate Teacher - Haberdashers' Hatcham Free School

Ernie has been part of Hatcham Free School for over nine years, working mainly with children who have special educational needs. He is passionate about helping every child enjoy their school day and believes strongly in adapting to each child’s unique ways of learning.

Before joining education, Ernie worked in social care and ran after-school clubs, where he discovered his talent for supporting young people. Influenced by two inspirational primary teachers, he carries with him the values of flexibility, resilience and never giving up.

For Ernie, teamwork is at the heart of being an effective Associate Teacher: acting as a bridge between pupils, teachers and parents, while constantly learning and developing his practice. Nicknamed “Stingray” by colleagues for the many children he has guided under his wing, he hopes to one day teach life skills — from tying shoelaces to cooking simple meals — so that children are well prepared for the world beyond school.

Tilly - Learning Support Assistant Apprentice

Tilly is a Learning Support Assistant Apprentice, supporting SEND students and all pupils in the classroom to ensure they feel heard, seen and valued. She is passionate about helping young people recognise their potential and develop confidence in themselves.

Inspired by her own teachers and mentors during sixth form, Tilly chose this career to make the same positive impact she experienced. She values patience, sensitivity and respect, recognising that every student has their own story and challenges beyond the classroom.

Alongside her role, Tilly studies youth work, which helps her understand the wider context of students’ behaviour and wellbeing. If she could teach a subject, it would be youth work — equipping pupils with skills to navigate life’s challenges. For Tilly, the most rewarding part of her job is seeing students grow, succeed and believe in themselves.
