School Closures and Emergency Situations
Guidance for Parents and Families
When might we need to close a school or restrict access?
Very occasionally, we may need to close a school, delay opening, or restrict movement on site to keep pupils, staff and visitors safe. These decisions are never taken lightly and are always made with safety as the first priority.
Situations where this may be necessary include:
- Severe weather, such as heavy snow, ice, extreme heat or flooding
- Utilities issues, for example loss of heating, water or electricity
- Safety or security incidents, including trespassers on site or a concern in the local area
- Building or site issues that mean it is unsafe to remain open
- Emergency incidents advised by the police or other emergency services
How we will communicate with you
If we need to take action, we will contact parents and guardians as quickly as possible using our usual school communication channels. This may include text messages, emails and updates on the school website.
We understand these situations can be worrying. Please be assured that information will be shared as soon as it is safe to and appropriate to do so.
How parents and guardians can support us
Your support makes a real difference in helping us manage incidents calmly and safely. During these times, we ask that parents and guardians:
- Only come to school outside of normal start and finish times, if specifically asked or directed, following alternative arrangements if provided
- Avoid repeatedly conacting the school, as this can prevent staff from managing the situation effectively
- Refrain from sharing messages or speculation on social media, as this can cause confusion or unnecessary alarm
- Refrain from contacting the press, allowing the Trust to manage any media enquiries appropriately
- Follow the instructions provided, including any guidance about collection arrangements or alternative provision
Staying Prepared
We regularly review and test our emergency procedures to make sure they are effective and appropriate. This includes practising scenarios so that staff and pupils know what to expect and how to respond calmly and safely.
These activities are part of our wider commitment to keeping our school communities safe and well prepared. Any tests will be handled sensitively and appropriately to ensure pupils and staff are comfortable.
Working together
We know that trust and clear communication are essential, especially in difficult situations. By working together and following this guidance, you help us to protect everyone involved and bring situations to a safe and swift conclusion.
Thank you for your understanding, patience and continued support.
