How does being active help children and young people feel better and learn better?
This year, our Habs Parent Partnerships: Together Talks will explore the strong link between being active, wellbeing and learning. We want to support families to understand how regular physical activity can help children and young people thrive - physically, emotionally and academically.
Being active supports much more than fitness. It can improve focus and readiness to learn, help children manage big feelings, build resilience and confidence, and support better sleep. Research also shows clear links between movement and brain development, memory and learning. We will also look at how physical activity can help children reset and self-regulate, especially in a world where screen time and digital pressures are increasing.
Each 90-minute session will include an engaging and practical talk from Rachael Mackenzie, an expert in neurological development. She will explain how movement supports the brain and behaviour, and share simple, realistic ideas that families can build into everyday routines. We will also consider how activity can be particularly helpful for neurodiverse children.
Parents and guardians will hear directly from students about how being active supports their wellbeing and learning, both in and out of school. At the end of each session, there will be time to speak with local clubs and partners, find out about school opportunities, and connect with other families.
These events are open to parents and guardians across both our primary and secondary schools and form part of our wider Getting Active priority and whole-child approach.
